17. Denton Offutt Store

Besides working at the sawmill, Abraham Lincoln clerked at a nearby store for Denton Offutt. William G. Greene, who became a lifelong friend of Lincoln's, served as an assistant. He recalled Lincoln as a "generous & accommodating Clerk and was then as much a Centre of attraction as he was when President of the U.S. though not quite so grand a one."

Within a year the business failed, so when the Black Hawk War broke out in 1832, Lincoln readily joined a volunteer company.
