10. Dr. John Allen Home

John Allen, a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, was one of two doctors in the village from Vermont. He arrived in town during 1831 and set up his practice in a cabin which served as a home and office.

Dr. Allen was one of the few pioneers who lived in New Salem as long as Abraham Lincoln did (1831-1837). He organized Sunday Schools and a temperance society, and was an active member of a Presbyterian church. He lived the balance of his life in nearby Petersburg, where he died in 1863.
