President Lincoln's funeral train leaves Washinton, D.C. for his hometown
of Springfield, Illinois.
April 25, 1861
President Lincoln's most famous political opponent, Stephen Douglas, makes his last
appearance in Springfield, Illinois, urging that political differences
be put aside to save the Union.
