Executive Mansion

Starting in 1855, Illinois governors began occupying this red brick Italianate mansion in downtown Springfield. Joel A. Matteson and his family were to first to move in, followed by William Bissell.

Bissell was the state's first Republican governor, and as a political colleague, Abraham Lincoln spoke at his inaugural celebration. The Bissells later invited the Lincolns to several large parties before Lincoln became president.
