Gage Statue in Lincoln, Illinois

Kansas native Robert M. Gage sculpted this seated Lincoln for Lincoln College, a school named for the president in 1865. The heroic-sized bronze work on a granite base is one of two outdoor Lincoln statues on the campus. Appropriately, the school is located in the first town named for Lincoln.

Gage's "Lincoln, the Student" was dedicated in 1961 and bears an inscription attributed to Lincoln, "I shall prepare myself. Someday my chance will come." Lincoln, who was largely self-educated, taught himself law and surveying and carried books with him much of his life.
