Fairbanks Pioneer Bust in Washington, D.C.

This heroic-sized marble bust by American sculptor Avard Fairbanks is in the collection at Ford's Theatre where President Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Called "Lincoln the Pioneer," it is second in a series of "Four Ages of Abraham Lincoln" commissioned by Broadcast Music for the Lincoln sesquicentennial. Each bust in the series measures 21 x 10 x 9 inches and depicts a different stage in Lincoln's life.

During the unveiling on February 1, 1960, the sculptor was joined by poet Carl Sandburg, collector Earl H. Hardin, and Senator John S. Cooper of the Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission.
