Lincoln the Debater by Leonard Crunelle

The original of this work commemorates the second Lincoln-Douglas debate held on August 27, 1858. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas met in seven official debates that year during a widely publicized Illinois senatorial campaign which Douglas eventually won.

Crunelle's figure shows Lincoln waiting to reply to questions by Douglas from the first debate. You can see the original statue, dedicated on August 27, 1929, in Freeport, Illinois.
