Tomb Chamber

In the sarcophagus chamber, veterans hold ceremonies on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, placing memorial wreaths by the red marble grave marker. On the back wall is inscribed "Now he belongs to the ages, " the tribute Secretary of War Edwin Stanton is believed to have given at Lincoln's passing.

Lincoln's body rests in a reinforced concrete vault beneath the floor, a precaution taken by his son Robert following an attempt to steal the body. Lincoln's wife and three sons lie in crypts in the opposite wall, but his eldest son Robert was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
