Lincoln Statue in Pennsylvania Memorial

As Henry Sweney noted in his November 29, 1863 letter to his brother, Gettysburg "has become a place of note since the Memorable Battle of July and is as you remark, destined to be one of those places which will go down in history to coming generations."

Over the years, hundreds of monuments appeared on the battlefield, including the huge Pennsylvania memorial. Here, President Lincoln is one of eight bronze statues in the domed granite monument. The monument was dedicated in 1910, and the statues were placed in 1913. J. Otto Schweizer, the Swiss-born sculptor, created this Lincoln statue and two others.
