Old State Capitol
This historic Greek Revival building dominates the
downtown square in Springfield. It was associated with Abraham Lincoln as
early as 1837, when the cornerstone was laid. Lincoln helped to
move the state capital from Vandalia to Springfield in that year.
In the years before his Presidency, Lincoln was a frequent visitor
to this building. He tried cases before the Illinois Supreme Court,
did research in the library, and gave his famous "House Divided"
speech in Representatives Hall.
