Old State Capitol
This historic Greek Revival building dominates the
downtown square in Springfield. It was associated with Abraham Lincoln as
early as 1837, when the cornerstone was laid. Lincoln helped to
move the state capital from Vandalia to Springfield in that year.
During the time before becoming president Lincoln was a frequent visitor
to this building. He tried cases before the Illinois Supreme Court,
did research in the law library, and gave speeches including the
famous "House Divided."
