Fairbanks Tablet in Galesburg, Illinois

In 1858 Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas held a series of seven political debates across Illinois as they vied for a seat in the U.S. Senate. On October 7 they appeared in their fifth debate on the campus of Knox College.

Today you can see bronze relief tablets commemorating the speakers on the east side of Old Main, where the debate platform stood. Sculptor Avard Fairbanks created the tablets, which were installed in 1958, the centennial of the event.
